Storm Ellen

Storm Ellen

Storm Ellen is a four minute mindful moment telling the story of one storm on one patch of coastline. Filmed around the surf spot of Polzeath in 2021 in the lead up to Storm Ellen, an early season storm that hit the north coast of Cornwall, in August. The film follows the storm building from the first gusts of wind rustling the tender grasses of pristine gardens to the crashing waves where thrill seekers play.

Marine Meadows of Cornwall

Marine Meadows of Cornwall

A short environmental documentary about Seagrass meadows in Cornwall.

A collaboration between Project Seagrass & LIFE Recreation ReMEDIES, with extra support and funding from Natural England, Ocean Conservation Trust, Falmouth Harbour, Cornwall Council, Feel Good Drinks & Eden Project.

Seagrass is one of the most important ecosystems on our planet.

This incredible marine plant – goes unnoticed by many – yet absorbs vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and provides a home for a huge diversity of marine animals. Including critically endangered species such as the Seahorse and also the young of commercially important species such as Pollock, Cod and whiting.

Shockingly, the UK is predicted to have lost up to 92% of its Seagrass during the last century. This is mostly due to negative human impacts.

There is much more that can be done to protect these productive, biodiverse underwater meadows.

From the Culch

From the Culch is assembled from the offcuts of a lost 1978 BBC documentary about the Truro oyster fishery. After the film was broadcast a can of randomly assembled 16mm film was given to Dennis Laity, crewman on the George Glasson, as a memory of his late brother Paul, who passed away not long after shooting wrapped. The can of film lay in Dennis’s airing cupboard for 45 years, unseen, before being passed to the director. A 4K digital scan revealed the beauty captured in the celluloid and Dennis, now 82 years old, gave voice to his memories of the men who dredged the Carrick Roads and the boats they sailed on. A story emerged – of work, love and loss, of time and memory, of dog biscuits and sideburns – and the discarded bin cuts grew into the film you see today.

From the River

From the River

For millennia Sailor’s Creek has been a haven for wildlife, boats and people. A tidal branch of the Penryn River, opposite to Falmouth, it is a place that is by turns magical and imposing, peaceful and chaotic, beautiful and ugly.

A dwindling number of human residents live off grid in the hulks of luggers, leisure yachts and fishing boats, many of which are in a state of advanced decay. The dangerous nature of the creek ensures that wildlife is free to make a home amidst the rust, rotten timber and fibreglass – untroubled by the heavy footfall that such a place would normally suffer, so close to an urban centre.
But change is fast approaching. After a tragic accident the creek has passed into new guardianship. A collective formed of local boat builders, environmentalists and developers have leased the land with a view to regeneration – making the creek safe for laying up and mooring boats, cleaning up the environmental impact caused by years of neglect, and working with the remaining residents to find solutions to their housing needs.

From the River tells the story of this unique and fascinating place, exploring what happens when the romantic ideal of living outside of societal norms meets the harsh realities of modern life – and the harsher realities of nature.
